AutoCad Floorplan

For this project we were tasked with creating a layout of a single floor plan of our current residence. I currently live in a four bedroom apartment in Manhattan and my final image represents my measurements of this residence. In order to create this floor plan I had to measure practically my entire apartment and I think my final image portrays the layout quite nicely. I drew the floor plan in the Autodesk program AutoCad. I primarily used the line tool to build up the space, with the exception of a few circles for sinks and stoves etc. The offset tool was also quite helpful in giving the walls a believable thickness with minimal effort. Autocad also has a handy supply of furnishings that you can place inside your drawing. The furnishings seen in my drawings are taken from there. After completing my drawing I separated the different elements (walls, windows, doors, etc) onto different layers so when I added the FIA Standard Plotstyle it edited the different elements by layer. This made it easier on me so I didn't have to take my final image into Illustrator and edit the line weights myself.

Reflection Questions:

1. How quickly did you move through this project? Was it an appropriate respite for the course?

I moved quickly through this project compared to the other assignments so far and yes I think it was an appropriate respite for the course. This program was also easy to accommodate to considering a lot of the same commands and functions can be used also in Rhino which I'm much more comfortable with.

2. How comfortable would you feel doing a drawing of a wall section or similar line drawing (instruction to come in future classes) in the software?

I would feel semi-comfortable using the program, but since I have barley even begun to explore the tools past the line, offset, and circle tools I would need more instruction. I think this program is easier to adapt to than the others we've used in this class because of our background knowledge in Rhino.

3. What challenges did this project present?

This project presented problems in accuracy. If you messed up one wall's dimensions it could continue messing up the rest of the layout.This comment wasn't necessarily a challenge but I don't like the aesthetic of the selection cursor. It took me a while to even realize I was using the right selection tool.

4. What outside resources did you explore beyond what was presented?

Some outside resources I explored were the different plot styles available. I looked into this aspect of the program because I thought it was a very efficient aspect of the project.

(FYI : I currently live with another student in this class so if our layouts look similar it is not because we cheated, it's because we both live together.)
